The goalkeeper – ‘The goalkeeper’s primary role is to prevent the opposing team from successfully moving the ball over the defended goal-line’. From Wikipedia.
Sometimes magical things happen. The Premier League fixture between Stoke City and Southampton was going to be one of those hum-drum affairs. The type of match only the most committed supporters attend, why, because on paper it was deemed to have about as much excitement as watching paint dry. And even then watching the paint might have been more exciting than enduring 90 minutes of Stokes tedious long-ball game.
But then the wind blew and this happened.
With 13 seconds gone, what was about to be a routine goal kick from Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic turned into a wonder goal and gave Stoke an unexpected 1-0 lead.
Begovic understandably looked sheepish; he became only the fifth goalkeeper who has scored in the Premier League. He joins an exclusive list and has achieved something that many outfield players never achieve in their entire career – scoring a goal.
The other goalkeepers to score a Premier League goal are Tim Howard; Brad Friedel; Perter Schmeichel and Paul Robinson.
Sadly for the supporters, that was as good as it got. The match ended Stoke 1, Southampton 1 – and I am sure Stokes strikers were grateful for their goalies score – after 10 games Asmir Begovic is now Stokes joint-top scorer this season.
